SERIES HISTORY VERSUS GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN
This will mark the first ever meeting between the two schools.
SEASON OPENERS
The Eagles have won six of their last eight season openers, but have dropped the last two. The Eagles are 23-20 all-time in season openers and 13-6 when opening at home.
A GLANCE AT THE EAGLES (CLICK HERE FOR SEASON PREVIEW)
The Eagles are looking to bounce back from back-to-back subpar years and a total of eight wins. The 2017 Eagles lost eight games by one goal and return six starters. Despite only three wins in 2017 the Eagles are confident and ready to make their way back to being a team to reckon with in the Big South. The season opener is the first of six straight home games for the Eagles, which will give them a good opportunity to get off to a good start.
TAKING ON THE PEACH STATE
The Eagles have four programs on their schedule from the state of Georgia this season. In addition to the season opener against Georgia Southwestern the Eagles host Mercer and Georgia State while traveling to Georgia Southern. The same three teams were on Winthrop's schedule in 2017 as the Eagles fell 3-2 in overtime at Georgia State and Georgia Southern 2-1 while earning a draw at Mercer (1-1).
BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
Winthrop was picked sixth in the Big South preseason poll as High Point was voted as the favorite with 7-of-9 first-place votes. High Point was followed by Radford, Campbell, Presbyterian College and Gardner-Webb. Tied for 7
th was UNC Asheville and Longwood while USC Upstate was voted 9
th. The top six teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the Big South Conference Tournament.
WHAT'S AHEAD
Following their season opener against Georgia Southwestern, the Eagles will have two home matches next weekend when they face Mercer on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. and Wofford College on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m.
