SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Winthrop secured a season-opening draw Sunday afternoon, finishing 1-1 against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Junior
Natalie Royaards put the Eagles on the board in the 17
th minute as she took advantage of a defensive miscue and toe-poked the ball past the Chanticleer goalkeeper.
Coastal Carolina tied the game in the 57
th minute but the play of senior goalkeeper
Kelly Horan helped the Eagles stay square. Horan made four saves in the second half and another three in the second period of overtime to secure the draw.
SCOUTING SC STATE
The Bulldogs have dropped both of their contests in the early season. Campbell bested SC State 4-1 while VMI downed the Bulldogs 5-1.
SERIES HISTORY
The Eagles and Bulldogs have met on 14 previous occasions, the most by any non-Big South school for the Eagles. Winthrop is 12-2 all-time against SC State and has won the last six meetings including an overtime contest last season.
