GREENSBORO, N.C. – Behind six runs and a strong defensive effort, Winthrop (22-25, 13-8 Big South Conference) defeated UNC Greensboro (34-12, 15-3 Southern Conference) on the road Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Dillon Morton led off the 2
nd inning with a double and advanced to third on a
Tyler Halstead single.
Cale Gibson scored Morton from third as he grounded out.
-In the 5
th inning, freshman
Ryan Watson hit his first-career home run, a two run score.
-The Eagles held UNCG scoreless until the 6
th inning when the Spartans got a run across on a single RBI.
-UNCG cut the Winthrop lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the 8
th with another one-run score.
-Winthrop added three runs in the top of the 9
th for some breathing room, started off by a solo home run from
Mitch Spires. Morton and Halstead hit back-to-back singles to put two baserunners on, and a Gibson groundout advanced them to second and third.
Hunter Lipscomb sent a single up the middle to score both and push the lead to 6-2.

Jason Crumley recorded two strikeouts and allowed two singles in the bottom of the 9
th. With two outs,
Dalton Whitaker came in to secure the final out and the victory.
NOTABLES
-Winthrop's six runs scored is the most since the Eagles also scored six in a 6-3 win over Radford on Apr. 13.
-Freshman
Cody Whitten pitched a new career-high 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on five hits.
