BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Winthrop baseball (22-26, 13-9 Big South Conference) fell 6-1 in the series opener on the road at league-leading Campbell (28-20, 18-4 Big South Conference) Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Campbell struck early in the 1st inning with three singles that scored two runs. Â

Tyler Halstead led off the 2
nd with a double, and a
Cale Gibson ground out brought him home for the score to make it 2-1.
-Gibson doubled in the 4
th, but Winthrop would add no other baserunners.
-Both sides went down in order in the 5
th.
-Gibson knocked his second double of the game with two outs in the 6
th, advancing Halstead to third (on base on a walk), but the Eagles were unable to get the run across.
-The 6
th would become a breakout inning for the Camels as they scored three runs on two hits, a two-RBI double and a wild pitch would allow a runner home.
-Trailing 5-1, the Eagles went down in order in the 7
th. Freshman
Macklin Ohs came in to pitch in the 7
th and sat down the side.
-Winthrop put together two singles in the 8
th and got a runner to third base, but the inning and scoring threat would end on a double play.
-Campbell tacked on a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 8
th and extend the lead to 6-1.

-Senior
Mitch Spires continued his hitting streak, extending it to 12-straight games. Spires has reached base in a team-high 20-consecutive games.
-Senior
Tyler Halstead's double increases his team-high season total to 15.
-Freshman
Macklin Ohs had his best outing in a conference match-up, giving up one hit and one run, the solo home run, and notching two strikeouts in 2.0 innings of work.
