CHARLESTON, S.C. – For the second-straight game, Winthrop (21-25, 13-8 Big South Conference) was defeated by a walk-off home run as Charleston Southern (15-31, 6-15 Big South Conference) earned a 2-1 win in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Eagles and Bucs battled through four scoreless frames before the Eagles broke the stalemate in the top of the 5
th inning.
-Two-straight walks to
Scout McFalls and
Ryan Watson set the Eagles up with two baserunners.
Jake Sullivan advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, then a
Brandon Fite flyout scored McFalls from third for a 1-0 lead.
-
Dillon Morton hit a double in the 6
th, but no other baserunners or hits in the inning ended the scoring threat.
-The Eagles also got runners to 2
nd and 3
rd in the 7
th inning, but were unable to capitalize.
-CSU tied up the ballgame at 1-1 in the bottom of the 8
th on a fielder's choice.
-Winthrop left two on base in the top of the 9
th, with McFalls advancing to third base.
-Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 9
th, CSU's Derek Horton hit a solo home run for the walk-off 2-1 win.
NOTABLES
-The loss was the second-straight walk-off game in as many days, both coming as solo home runs.
-Winthrop stranded 10 on the day, its second-straight game in double digits for runners left on base.
-Senior
Mitch Spires extended his team-high hitting streak to 10-straight games, and has reached base in 18-consecutive games, also a team-high.
-Senior RHP
Daniel Willcutt pitched all 8.0+ innings, allowing eight hits and striking out four.
