CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Behind an offensive breakout by the 49ers, Winthrop (20-22, 12-6 Big South Conference) fell 18-2 in a midday road match-up at Charlotte (24-19, 11-10 C-USA) on Wednesday afternoon at Hayes Stadium on the campus of UNC Charlotte.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Charlotte jumped in front with a two-run 1
st inning, started off with a leadoff single and double back-to-back.
-The Eagles went down in order in the 1
st and 2
nd, until
Scout McFalls broke the hitting drought with a single in the 3
rd.
Jake Sullivan would get on base as well in the 3
rd, but the Eagles were unable to get a run across.
-Charlotte posted a breakout six-run inning in the 3
rd to go ahead 8-0.
-Winthrop got on the board in the 4
th.
Mitch Spires and
Dillon Morton hit back-to-back singles to center field, then
Tyler Halstead loaded the bases on a dropped fly.
Cale Gibson brought home Spires with a single RBI to right. Â
-Sullivan belted a solo home run deep to left in the 5
th to make it an 8-2 Charlotte lead.
-Halstead smoked a double down the left field line to leadoff the 6
th , and would make it to third, but was tagged out at home on a fielder's choice.
-Sullivan sent a leadoff single to left to start things off in the 7
th followed by a
Brandon Fite single to right, but the Eagles would be unable to get a run across.
-A three-run homer by Dominick Cammarata would push the Charlotte lead to 11-2 in the 7
th.
-Winthrop went down in order in the 8
th and 9
th, while Charlotte continued to break out offensively, putting up seven more runs in the 8
th for an 18-2 lead and final.

-
Mitch Spires extended his team-high hitting streak to seven-straight games, and has reached base in 15-consecutive games, also a team-high.
-Winthrop recorded 10 hits on the day, including a three-hit performance by
Jake Sullivan.
-Winthrop sent eight pitchers to the mound on the staff day, giving up 18 runs on 17 hits.
