CHARLESTON, S.C. – Winthrop baseball (21-23, 13-6 Big South Conference) recovered from an early 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 series opening win over Charleston Southern (13-31, 4-15 Big South Conference).
Tyler Halstead recorded three hits while
Mitch Spires scored three runs on two hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Charleston Southern struck first in the bottom of the 2
nd, with an RBI single followed by a three-run homer for an early 4-0 lead.
-The Eagles got on the board in the 4
th as
Mitch Spires led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a ground out.
Tyler Halstead brought him home with a single.
-Spires' hot hitting continued in the 6
th as he knocked a ground-rule double to right center, then scored on a
Dillon Morton single to cut the CSU lead to 4-2. Â

Hunter Lipscomb tied up the game at 4-4 with a two-run home run in the 7
th.
-In the top of the 8
th, Spires got on base again when he was hit by a pitch, and advanced to third on a Morton single. Halstead then sent a single through to left to bring Spires home for his third run scored of the game and a 5-4 lead.

Mitch Spires extended his team-high hitting streak to eight-straight games, and has reached base in 16-consecutive games, also a team-high. With two hits on the night, he increased his team-high total of multiple hit games to 18. His three runs scored matched a season-high.

Tyler Halstead is on a six-game hitting streak and posted his ninth multiple-hit game of the season with three hits on the night.
-Sophomore LHP
Jason Crumley earned his first save of the season as he came in for the final two innings and allowed just one hit and no runs.
-Winthrop recorded 10 hits overall, improving to 14-5 when recording double-digit hits. The Eagles are 5-18 when failing to record 10 or more hits.
