Winthrop Falls in Game Two Of Series With Liberty

Rubber game of series Saturday at 2 p.m.

ROCK HILL, S.C. – In game two of the series, Winthrop baseball (24-28, 15-11 Big South Conference) fell 11-2 to Liberty (28-24, 16-10 Big South Conference). The Flames put together 13 hits and stranded 17 in their offensive onslaught. The two will face off in the rubber game Saturday at 2 p.m. with Winthrop's Senior Day festivities set to begin at approximately 1:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Liberty jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 2nd inning, led off by a Jonathan Embry triple.

-Cody Whitten came on to pitch to start the 3rd for the Eagles.

-Cam Locklear sent a two-run homer to left field to give the Flames a 6-0 lead.

-Liberty starting RHP Noah Skirrow posted three-straight strikeouts to sit down the Eagles in the bottom of the 2nd, followed by the Eagles posting a rare four-strikeout inning in the 3rd. Jake Sullivan struck out but reached first on a wild pitch.

-The Flames tacked on three more with a three-run homer by Dylan Allen in the 4th for a 9-0.

-Winthrop got on the board in the bottom of the 4th. Tyler Halstead got on base with a walk and scored as Cale Gibson hit a double to left center.

-Each squad posted a hit in the 6th but no runs scored.

-Liberty plated two more in the 7th for an 11-1 lead.

-Winthrop got the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the 8th. Tyler Baker singled, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Halstead got on with a walk and Gibson singled to juice the bases. Hunter Lipscomb got Baker home on a fielder's choice and the inning ended with Jake Sullivan out at first.
 
NOTABLES
-Liberty scored 11 runs on 13 hits in its offensive burst, stranding 17 runners on base.

-Entering the game in the 7th inning, Tyler Baker recorded his first hit of the season with his 8th inning single.

UP NEXT
The series finale is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday with Senior Day festivities for the 2018 senior class of Riley Arnone, Matt Crohan, Tyler Halstead, Mitch Spires and Daniel Willcutt set to begin at approximately 1:30 p.m.
