FARMVILLE, VA— Winthrop's comeback fell just short in a 4-3 loss at Longwood in the opening game of its Big South Conference series, Friday evening at Lancer Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Longwood was hitless over the first two innings, but broke through in the third to take the game's first lead
- With one out, Jessica Smith reached on a bunt single followed by a walk by Glenn Walters
- Krista Kelly stepped in and delivered a single through the right side to score Smith and then Destiny Martinez scored Walters on a squeeze bunt
- The third run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly by Kaylynn Batten
- Batten made it a 4-0 game in the 5th inning as she tripled to right center, scoring Kelly from first after she walked
- Eagles tried to rally in the seventh as Blake Wallert go things started with a leadoff single, her second hit of the game
- Wallert moved to second on a fielder's choice by Majette as both runners were safe
- Tori Walker singled with one out, scoring Wallert and moving pinch-runner Kamryn Culp to third
- Then with two outs, Ashley Westbrooks doubled to right center scoring two runs to make it a one-run game at 4-3
- Longwood was able to hang on as Morgan Lowers struck out looking to end the game
- Kiley Majette tossed five innings allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts but suffered the loss and fell to 9-14
EXTRA BASES
- Westbrooks extended her hitting streak to four games and has now reached in six straight
- Westbrooks finished the game with three hits, her 5th three-hit game of the season, her 12th multi-hit game and 8th multi-RBI game
- Winthrop is now 3-3 in the opening game of Big South Conference series with two of the three losses by a single run
- Westbrooks increased her average with runners in scoring position to .400 (.429 in league play) on the year while Walker improved hers to .313 (.333 in league play)
