Eagle Softball Earns DH Split At First-Place Longwood Saturday Afternoon

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop had two strong pitching performances to help it earn a doubleheader split at league-leading Longwood, Sunday afternoon at Lancer Field. The Eagles fell 2-1 in 10 innings in the first game before bouncing back to take the nightcap 5-3.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • This was a pitcher's duel that extended into the 10th inning
  • The teams were scoreless until the 9th inning when the Eagles grabbed the first lead
  • Keleigh Romine singled with one out and then Blake Wallert reached on a throwing error by the pitcher that allowed Romine to come all the way around from first to score
  • In the bottom of the 9th Longwood tied the game on a solo homerun by Carr with one out
  • Ashley Westbrooks doubled to center with one out in the 10th and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt but Romine struck out swinging on a 1-2 pitch
  • A leadoff single by Smith started things for Longwood in the 10th
  • Smith was sacrificed to second and two batters later D. Martinez singled through the hole at short, scoring the winning run from third
  • Madyson Watson tossed a complete game 9.1 innings allowing two runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts as she fell to 5-6
 
Game 2
  • Longwood struck in the bottom of the first and third for a 2-0 lead
  • Then the Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth
  • Romine started it off with a leadoff single followed by a bunt single by Wallert
  • After Kiley Majette struck out swinging, Walllert stole second to put two runners in scoring position
  • Ansley Gilreath stepped up and hammered her ninth homerun of the season with a three-run shot to right for the lead
  • Majette helped her own cause in the 5th inning when she drove in Tori Walker with an RBI double to left center for a 4-2 lead
  • Longwood got one back in the bottom of the 5th as Batten hit a solo homerun
  • The Eagles added an insurance run in the 6th inning as Morgan Lowers led off the inning with a single and stole second with one out
  • Sabrina Shroades hit a pinch-hit single to left to put runners at the corners as Westbrooks stepped in and delivered an RBI single to left for the 5-3 lead
  • Majette tossed a complete game allowing two earned runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts to improve to 10-14 
 
EXTRA BASES
  • Westbrooks extended her hitting streak to six games and on-base streak to eight straight
  • Majette earned her first win in the circle since April 8
  • The Eagles pounded out 11 hits in the final game of the series, which was equal to the amount they had in the first two games combined
  • Morgan Lowers broke out of an 0-for-25 slump by going 2-for-3 with a run in the game three victory
  • Gilreath had three RBI which gives her eight multi-RBI games on the year and a career-high 24 on the season, which doubles her total from last year
 
ON DECK
Winthrop is off until Friday, May 4 when it heads to Lynchburg, VA to take on Liberty in a three-game series. The series will start with a single-game on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
