Softball Heads To Furman Tuesday Afternoon For Doubleheader

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop will look to end a four-game skid as it travels to Furman for a midweek doubleheader, Tuesday afternoon in non-conference softball action at Pepsi Stadium.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS FURMAN
  • This will mark the 2nd and 3rd meetings of the season for Winthrop and Furman
  • The two teams met back on Feb. 25 in Greenville as part of the Spartan Classic
  • Furman won the meeting 2-1 in 10 innings as it now leads the all-time series 33-31 
GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
  • Have dropped four straight after getting swept by Radford this past weekend
  • The Eagles committed six errors in the three games against Radford and allowed three or more runs in an inning in all three games
  • The Eagles were 10-for-23 on the weekend with runners in scoring position but were just 1-for-7 with the bases loaded
  • Ashley Westbrooks has hit safely in six straight games and leads the team with a .344 average
  • She's raised her average 32 points since the start of the hitting streak
  • Morgan Lowers is second on the team with a.320 average and over the last 17 games has raised her average 50 points as she's batting .368 with six runs, three doubles, a triple and seven RBI in that span
  • Westbrooks has batted .362 with 14 runs, three doubles, three homeruns and 11 RBI in the last 17 games
  • Keleigh Romine has been productive at the plate since becoming an every day starter as the designated player and right fielder
  • Romine in the last 17 games is batting .304 with eight runs, three doubles, e RBI and a .385 on-base percentage
  • In the meeting with the Paladins Kiley Majette tossed a complete game nine innings allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with no walks and nine strikeouts
GLANCE AT THE PALADINS
  • Coming off a 1-0 loss at 8th-ranked South Carolina on Wednesday, Mar. 28 and have lost four straight after winning six in a row
  • Just like the Eagles, Furman was swept in its last conference series after losing all three at UNC Greensboro
  • The last two losses have been by the score of 1-0
  • Furman is 17-2 at home this season with the only two losses coming to Fairfield (3-0) and Delaware State (5-3)
  • Led by their three-time all-conference pitcher Lindsey Bert, who held the Eagles to one run on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts in the 2-1 on Feb. 25
  • Bert is 15-7 on the year as she tossed six innings allowing one run on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts in the 1-0 loss at South Carolina
  • The offense is led by AnnaRose Borrelli, who is batting .273 with 10 runs, seven doubles, five homeruns and a team-high 25 RBI
  • Lauren Duggar is batting .250 with 13 runs and is 15-of-17 on the bases
  • The Paladins have done a good job on the year getting leads early, outscoring opponents 32-19 in the first inning and 42-24 over the first two
  • Bert is second in the nation in strikeouts with 185 as the leader Randi Rupp of Texas State has 200 (as of Apr. 2) 
HEAD COACH MARK COOKE
  • Head coach Mark Cooke is in his 34th season overall and 29th year at Winthrop
  • Cooke announced this will be his final season coaching as he enters the year with a record of 763-805-3 at Winthrop and 847-854-3 in his career
  • He is the Big South Conference's all-time leader in victories (763), conference wins (214), and conference tournament victories (53)
  • During his tenure the Eagles have won four Big South Tournament titles and four Big South regular season championships
  • Cooke has led his team to 11 Big South Conference Tournament Title games (tied with Coastal Carolina's Jess Dannelly for the most by any coach in league history)
  • Voted Big South Coach of the Year in 2005, 2007 and 2008
  • He guided the 2007 squad to a program record 50 wins and is one of only two teams in the history of the Big South to win 50 games in a single-season
2018 PLAYER HONORS/MILESTONES
  • Kiley Majette was named the Big South Pitcher of the Week after the opening weekend for the Eagles and this past week for a second time this season
  • Majette tossed her second no-hitter of the season and didn't allow a run in 16 innings pitched during the Winthrop/adidas Tournament
  • For her first weekly honor she was 2-0 in three appearances that included a no-hitter against Samford
  • It was the first no-hitter in the program since Kelli Johnson had one on Apr. 21, 2005 against Furman
  • Majette reached 300 strikeouts in her career and now has 316, which ranks 7th on the all-time list
  • In the first game against Coastal Carolina, Blake Wallert played in her 100th game and in that game hit a walk-off grand slam to run-rule Coastal in an 11-3 win
2018 SCHEDULE
  • Eagles have 18 contests scheduled against teams that finished in the Top 125 of RPI in 2017, 12 in the Top 100, 11 in the Top 75, eight in the Top 50 and four in the Top 25
  • Seven opponents on the slate this year competed in an NCAA Regional in 2017
  • There are 26 different opponents on the schedule and 14 of them had a winning record in 2017 (15 were .500 or better)
  • Seven of the opponents finished with 30 or more wins and four had 40 or more wins   
BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
Winthrop was picked to finish sixth in the annual preseason poll, despite returning eight starters and all four pitchers from the 2017 team that finished 5th in the league. Longwood was voted to win the league, receiving 5-of-8 first place votes, followed by Liberty, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Radford, Winthrop, Presbyterian College and Gardner-Webb.
 
ON DECK
Winthrop will stay on the road as it travels to Clinton, SC for its second road series of Big South play. The Eagles will face Presbyterian College in a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 7 at 1 p.m. and wrap-up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. with a single-game.

The event will take place on Apr. 14 at 6 p.m. inside the Winthrop Coliseum.
