CULLOWHEE, NC— Winthrop softball dropped both games of a doubleheader at Western Carolina with a 6-1 loss in the first game and a 2-1 loss in the nightcap, Tuesday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Western Carolina took advantage of an error by the Eagles that kept the inning alive to grab an early 2-0 lead
- Sabrina Shroades recorded the first two outs before a grounder to third was misplayed by A.G. Gardner to keep the inning going
- Shroades walked the next batter followed by back-to-back doubles from Madison Armstrong and Shaina Reed for a 3-0 lead
- The Catamounts added three more in the 5th as Armstrong started it off with her second RBI double of the game
- That was followed by a sacrifice fly from Reed and then an RBI double from Addie Pate
- Eagles got on the board in the 6th inning as Taylor Charlton drove in her first career RBI
- Ashley Westbrooks singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on a foul out and on to third on the same play on a bad throw by the left fielder
- Charlton stepped in a grounded out to second to score Westbrooks from third to make it 6-1
- Shroades took the loss in the circle and falls to 2-7 after allowing three unearned runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in one inning
Game 2
- Western Carolina scored first as Chapman hit a solo homerun to right center in the 2nd inning
- Blake Wallert tied the game at 1-1 in the 6th inning as she hit a pinch-hit solo homerun to center
- Western Carolina came right back to take the lead in the bottom half of the sixth as Reed hit a leadoff homerun to right center
- Kiley Majette took the loss and falls to 9-13 after allowing two runs on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts
EXTRA BASES
- Ashley Westbrooks has now hit safely in three straight games and has reached in five straight
- Westbrooks is now five hits shy of 100 in her career
- Wallert's homerun was the fourth of the season and first since her grand slam against Coastal Carolina
- A.G. Gardner singled in the first game of the doubleheader to extend her hitting streak to a career-high four games before going 0-for-2 in the nightcap

Winthrop is back in action on the weekend when it travels to Farmville, VA to take on Longwood in a three-game series. The series will open with a single-game on Friday, April 20 at 5 p.m. and wrap-up Saturday with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
