Winthrop Edged 4-3 At No. 38 NC State In Final Regular Season Match

Kauffman and Proctor stay undefeated in doubles with win over No. 28 team.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Winthrop women's tennis (16-5, 8-0 Big South Conference) took on No. 38 NC State (15-11, 6-5 ACC) in its final match of the regular season, falling 4-3 in the tightly contested match.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
-The Wolfpack took the doubles point, but the Eagles' undefeated duo, No. 60 Megan Kauffman/Lauren Proctor took down NC State's No. 28 Anna Rogers/Claudia Wiktorin to improve to 19-0 on the season.  

-NC State took a 2-0 lead with a win at court three, but freshman Tayla Van Eck got the Eagles on the board with a straight-set win at No. 4. NC State pulled to a 3-1 lead with a victory at No. 2, a rare three-set match for Alisa Soloveva.

-No. 31 Lauren Proctor would draw the Eagles in striking distance, defeating No. 81 Anna Rogers in a three-set battle at No. 1, coming back strong in the second two sets after a narrow 5-7 defeat in the first set.

-NC State would clinch the match with a victory at No. 5, but Ellie Burns would earn the Eagles a final point with a third-set tiebreaker match win at No. 6.

NOTABLES
-Four of the six singles courts would need three sets to be decided.

-No. 60 Lauren Proctor and Megan Kauffman remained undefeated and improved to a Big South-best 19-0 on the season with their victory on court one.

-Ellie Burns has won six of her last seven matches.

-No. 31 Proctor improves to 17-2 on the season and has won nine consecutive matches.

UP NEXT
Winthrop will enjoy the No. 1 seed in this week's Big South Conference Tournament, with its sights set on earning the program's 20th conference tournament championship. The Eagles' first match will be in the quarterfinals on Thurs., Apr. 19 at 9 a.m. against the winner of No. 8 Gardner-Webb/No. 9 Longwood.
