Winthrop Advances to Big South Semifinals With 4-0 Sweep Of Longwood

Eagles didn't drop a set in the quarterfinal shutout win.

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Top-seeded Winthrop women's tennis (17-5, 8-0 Big South Conference) began its pursuit of a 20th Big South Championship title with a 4-0 sweep of No. 9 Longwood (9-11, 0-8 Big South Conference) Thursday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
-Winthrop won the doubles point for the 19th time out of their 22 matches this season, with quick 6-0 and 6-1 victories on courts one and two, respectively. No Winthrop doubles duo gave up more than one game.

-The Eagles' dominance continued in singles play, as Ellie Burns led off with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6, the first shut-out win of her career.

-No. 32 Lauren Proctor followed suit with a 6-0, 6-2 win at court one for a 3-0 team score lead.

-Alisa Soloveva clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2, maintaining her perfect record of straight-set conference wins.

-On the unfinished courts, no Eagle dropped a set.

NOTABLES
- No. 32 Lauren Proctor (18-2) and Alisa Soloveva (18-3) own the best two records in the Big South Conference. Proctor is undefeated in conference play and has won all but one of her league matches in straight-sets, while Soloveva has also won each of her conference matches without dropping a set.

-With 18 singles wins, Soloveva has matched her 2017 freshman win total (17-6 overall record.)

-No. 29 doubles duo Lauren Proctor and Megan Kauffman remained undefeated and improved to 20-0 on the season with their victory on court one.

-Ellie Burns has won seven of her last eight matches, all but one in straight sets.

UP NEXT
Winthrop advances to the first of two semifinal matches on Fri., Apr. 20, taking on the winner of No. 4 Charleston Southern and No. 5 Presbyterian.
