GREENVILLE, S.C. – Winthrop baseball (16-18, 8-4 Big South Conference) earned a 5-4 win on the road at Furman (16-17, 2-4 Southern Conference) Tuesday evening behind 12 hits and a 9
th inning defensive stand.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Furman would get on the board first with a single RBI in the bottom of the 2
nd.
-It would take until the 5
th inning for the Eagles to strike, posting three runs to pull ahead.
Jake Sullivan and
Brandon Fite each got on base with singles, then
Mitch Spires hit a bomb to left field.
-Fite gave Winthrop a 4-1 lead in the 7
th with a single RBI.
-In the 8
th, a leadoff single by
Dillon Morton got things going and a
Scout McFalls single would bring him home for a 5-1 lead.
-Furman added one in the 8
th with a solo homer to cut the Winthrop lead to 5-2.
-The Paladins weren't done fighting, putting together a four-hit, two-run 9
th inning.
Dalton Whitaker came in to close with runners on first and third, allowing an RBI single, but would not allow another run, despite the winning Furman being on first base. Two fielder's choice plays would wrap up the win for Winthrop and not allow the tying run past third base.

Jason Crumley made just his second start in his 12
th appearance of the season and earned his first win of the season with a season-long 4.0 innings pitched. Crumley matched a season-high five strikeouts and did not allow any multi-base hits.

Jake Sullivan belted a season-high three hits, going 3-for-5 overall.

Mitch Spires added three RBI to his season total to lead the team with 25. Spires also leads the squad with 44 hits, tied for fourth in the Big South Conference. His team-high 10 doubles is tied for second in the league.
-Spires has knocked three home runs in the past two games after only hitting one all season prior.
-Freshman
Ryan Watson, from Greenville, S.C., made his first-career start at catcher in his hometown and scored a run.

After nine-straight road games, Winthrop returns home to the friendly confines of The Winthrop Ballpark to host Radford in Big South play, Fri.-Sun., Apr. 13-15. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m., Saturday will start off at 1 p.m., an earlier than usual first pitch due to the annual Eagle Club Scholarship Auction that evening at 6 p.m., and the series finale is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday.
