ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop baseball (17-18, 9-4 Big South Conference) opened its series with Radford (12-21, 4-9 Big South Conference) with a 6-3 victory Friday evening at The Winthrop Ballpark. The Eagles recorded 14 hits, including three multiple-base hits from senior
Tyler Halstead, just one shy of their season-high 15.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Winthrop got on the board first in the bottom of the 2
nd courtesy of a RBI single by
Alex Raines, but Radford was able to answer with a score on a wild pitch to tie it 1-1.

Dillon Morton knocked a double to right center in the bottom of the 3
rd to bring home
Mitch Spires for a 2-1 lead.
-Two scoreless frames would be broken by
Tyler Halstead in the bottom of the 6
th with a two-run bomb over the left field fence for a 4-1 lead.

Brandon Fite tacked on another in the 6
th with a RBI single to bring home
Alex Raines. With runners on the corners,
Mitch Spires sent another single into center to bring
Jake Sullivan across and push the lead to 6-1.
-The Highlanders took advantage of two Eagle errors to spark their offense in the 8
th, plating two off RBI singles to cut the lead to 6-3 but would be unable to mount a scoring threat in the 9
th as Winthrop secured the series-opening win.

The series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. with the second game set to begin approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
The Eagles have two midweek contests next week, heading to Davidson on Tues., Apr. 17 at 6 p.m., then hosting USC Upstate at 6 p.m. on Weds., Apr. 18. Winthrop continues Big South play at home with a three-game series next weekend, Fri.-Sun., Apr. 20-22, against UNC Asheville.
