Winthrop Downs The Citadel 8-1 With Explosive First Inning

Hunter Lipscomb leads the way with three-RBI night.

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop baseball (5-8) took advantage of an explosive first inning to down The Citadel (5-7) Wednesday evening at Winthrop Ballpark.

The Citadel led off the action with a run in the first, but the Eagles answered immediately with a monster first inning, batting around the order, notching up seven runs on five hits and chasing off the Bulldog starter from the mound.

The Eagles pitching staff would shut down the Bulldogs offense for the night, allowing no further runs, only three total hits on the night and combining for 11 strikeouts. The starter, senior RHP Daniel Willcutt, would earn the win with freshmen Cody Whitten and Macklin Ohs, sophomore Turner Scruggs and redshirt junior Dalton Whitaker each taking the mound as well.

 NOTABLES
- Junior outfielder Hunter Lipscomb was 2-for-4 on the night, including a double, with two runs scored and a team-high three RBI.

-Junior outfielder Matthew Mulkey notched a triple in the fourth inning, his first three-base hit of the season.
