ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop baseball (5-8) took advantage of an explosive first inning to down The Citadel (5-7) Wednesday evening at Winthrop Ballpark.
The Citadel led off the action with a run in the first, but the Eagles answered immediately with a monster first inning, batting around the order, notching up seven runs on five hits and chasing off the Bulldog starter from the mound.
The Eagles pitching staff would shut down the Bulldogs offense for the night, allowing no further runs, only three total hits on the night and combining for 11 strikeouts. The starter, senior RHP

Macklin Ohs, sophomore
Turner Scruggs and redshirt junior
Dalton Whitaker each taking the mound as well.

Winthrop is back on the road this weekend for a three-game series with Eastern Tennessee State. The Eagles return to Winthrop Ballpark Tuesday and Wednesday next week for two nonconference matchups. Winthrop hosts Furman Tues., Mar. 13 at 6 p.m. and a makeup game with UNC Greensboro on Weds., Mar. 14, also at 6 p.m.
