BUIES CREEK, NC – The Winthrop women's basketball team battled the Campbell Camels but fell short Saturday afternoon, 57-45.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop (2-25, 1-15) jumped out to an early 4-2 lead but then went cold from the field as the Camels went on an 11-0 run, opening a 13-4 lead. Courtney Hagaman connected on a three-pointer just before the end of the period to head into the second quarter down 13-7.
The Eagles outscored Campbell (14-13, 7-9) in the second quarter, staying within striking distance going into the half. Campbell got its lead up to eight in the second quarter but the Eagles were able to close the quarter on a 6-2 run to trail 23-20 at the break.
The Camels allowed the Eagles only three field goals in the third quarter. Winthrop was held scoreless over the last four minutes of the period and Campbell led 39-28 heading into the fourth quarter.
Both squads went back and forth in the fourth quarter. Winthrop outscored the Camels 17-16 in the final period but was unable to come up with defensive stops as the Eagles fell 57-45.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Anika Riley led the Eagles with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Ronata Rogers added 10 points and pulled down six boards.
Winthrop shot 33 percent from the field and 22 percent from three-point range. Campbell outrebounded the Eagles 40-32 and dominated the inside game outscoring the Eagles 26-12 in the paint.

Winthrop returns home Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. against Charleston Southern for its final home contest of the season. Prior to the game, the Eagles will recognize senior Ronata Rogers.
