Baseball Falls 9-5 in Fourth of Five-Straight Road Games

The home team has won every contest in series with USC Upstate.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Winthrop baseball (0-4) fell in its fourth of five-straight road contests Tuesday afternoon as USC Upstate (2-2-1) took a 9-5 victory at Harley Park. The Spartans jumped on top in the first with a Russel Schwertfeger 2 RBI single and a three-run homer by Devon Ortiz. The Eagles would struggle to overcome the early 5-0 deficit, but narrowed the margin to as close as 6-5 in the sixth inning before the Spartans answered.  

NOTABLES
- Sophomore LHP Jason Crumley came in in relief pitching 2.2 innings, allowing one run and notching five strikeouts.
- Freshman Dillon Morton hit the Eagles' first triple of the season, also bringing home the Eagles' first score of the day.
- Sophomore Scout McFalls had another solid day at the plate, going 2-for-4. The center-fielder has recorded at least one hit in each game so far this season.
 
UP NEXT
The Eagles have a short turnaround as they head to another in-state foe tomorrow, Feb. 21, taking on South Carolina at Founders Park in Columbia, S.C. at 4 p.m. LHP Riley Arnone is projected to start on the mound for the Eagles.
