Lacrosse Drops Home Contest to Cincinnati 12-10 Sunday

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team fell 12-10 Sunday afternoon to the Cincinnati Bearcats at Eagle Field.

Winthrop falls to 1-1 on the year with the loss while Cincinnati improved to 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The contest got off to a furious start as Cincinnati netted its first goal only 10 seconds into the match.  Winthrop quickly equaled the Bearcats only 17 seconds later.  Cincinnati scored two goals in a span of 67 seconds to go up 3-1 with 25:39 on the clock.  The scoring slowed after the opening five minutes with each team scoring two more goals and the Bearcats took a 5-3 lead into the break.

Cincinnati again started quick in the second half, scoring 36 seconds into the period.  After each side scored another goal, Winthrop scored four straight to take its first lead of the game at 8-7 with 18:06 remaining.  The Bearcats then scored three unanswered to go back up 10-8.  The Eagles pulled within one with just over 11 minutes on the clock but couldn't pull off another comeback.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Katie Clark and Nicole Beatson led the Eagles with three goals apiece.  Kristen Shriver scored once and assisted on two others while Katherine Judge added two goals of her own and led the team with six draw controls and four ground balls.

Cincinnati outshot the Eagles 29-25 and won the draw control battle 13-11.  Winthrop turned the ball over 16 times which included six on clearing opportunities.

WHAT'S UP NEXT

The Eagles will travel up I-77 on Thursday for its next contest against the Davidson Wildcats.  First draw is scheduled for 6 p.m.
