BOILING SPRINGS, NC – The Winthrop women's basketball fell on the road Saturday afternoon, 68-55 to the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Gardner-Webb (15-9, 5-7) dominated the opening quarter, limiting the Eagles to only five points. The Bulldogs led 20-5 after the first 10 minutes.
Winthrop (2-21, 1-11) slowly chipped away at the deficit in the second quarter as the Eagles cut the lead down as low as six. Gardner-Webb, however, closed the quarter on a 7-2 run and took a 34-23 lead into the break.
The two sides traded buckets through the first four minutes of the second half before the Bulldogs increased their lead to 14 points. Winthrop then finished the third quarter on a 12-5 run and trailed by seven heading into the final quarter.
A Courtney Hagaman three-pointer only seconds into the fourth quarter cut the Bulldog lead to only four. Gardner-Webb then had to secure their victory at the charity stripe. The Bulldogs went 8-for-11 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Eagles 19-10 after the Hagaman three.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Miquela Santoro had a strong outing for the Eagles, scoring 11 points, pulling down five rebounds and dishing out five assists. Ronata Rogers added 12 points and four boards. Kayla Atkins finished with nine rebounds.
Winthrop shot 43 percent from the floor and 36 percent from three-point range while the Bulldogs hit 48 percent of its field-goal attempts. The Eagles dominated 39-29 on the boards.
WHAT'S UP NEXT
Winthrop remains on the road for its next Big South tilt as the Eagles head to High Point for a 7 p.m. battle with the Panthers Tuesday.
