Courtney Hagaman scored a season-high 23 points Sunday to lead the Winthrop women's basketball team to a 58-57 upset victory over the Elon Phoenix.
The Eagles improved to 4-5 on the year, picking up their third straight victory. Elon fell to 4-5 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop came out very strong to start the game, opening a 10-point lead just over five minutes into the contest. The Eagles shot 59 percent from the field in the first quarter, led by Hagaman's 16 points. Winthrop led 25-9 after the first 10 minutes.
The tables turned a bit in the second quarter as the Eagles struggled from the field. Winthrop scored only five points in the second quarter, shooting 13 percent from the field. Winthrop's defense limited Elon to only 14 points and the Eagles held a 30-23 lead at the break.
Elon opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 32-30. The two sides starting trading baskets with neither side able to amass more than a three-point lead. Heading into the final quarter, Elon clung to a 45-42 advantage.
The Phoenix pushed their lead to as much as five with 6:27 left in the contest. The Eagles responded with a 7-0 run, taking a 54-52 lead with 3:30 on the clock. Winthrop extended its lead to four points with 43 seconds remaining. A three-pointer from
Elon cut the Eagle lead to only one with 26 seconds on the clock. After the ensuing inbound, the Eagles turned the ball over. The Phoenix missed a three-pointer with eight seconds left and a last ditch jumper from 10 feet clanged off the rim as the Eagles celebrated the 58-57 victory.

Hagaman's 23 points led all scorers as she was 9-of-19 from the field and 3-of-8 from three-point range.
Essence Cowan added 13 points and
Anika Riley fell just short of a double-double with nine points and 13 rebounds.
Winthrop finished shooting 39 percent from the field and 41 percent from three-point range. The Eagles were edged in rebounds 41-37 and forced 13 of Elon's 21 turnovers.

Winthrop will take a nine-day break before hitting the floor again December 18. The Eagles will travel to Statesboro, GA to take on Georgia Southern.
