Women's Basketball Falls 64-55 At Georgia Southern Tuesday Evening

STATESBORO, GA – The Winthrop women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped Tuesday evening, falling 64-55 on the road to Georgia Southern.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop (4-6) had a strong start to the evening, jumping out to a 4-0 lead.  After the two sides traded 8-0 runs, Winthrop continued to lead 12-8.  Georgia Southern tied the game at 12-12 before a 7-0 run gave Winthrop a 19-12 lead.  Winthrop led 19-14 after the opening 10 minutes.

Georgia Southern (5-5) slowly cut into the Winthrop lead in the second quarter and used an 8-0 run to take a 27-23 lead with 2:09 left in the half.  Winthrop scored the last four points of the quarter and the contest was tied 27-27 at the break.

Georgia Southern dominated the third quarter.  Winthrop managed only two points through the first 6:40 of the third quarter as Georgia Southern opened a 40-29 lead.  Despite knocking down three shots in the final 3:20 of the period, Winthrop trailed 49-36 heading into the final quarter.

Winthrop made a strong charge at the start of the fourth quarter, outscoring Georgia Southern 10-2 through the first 3:13 of the quarter.  The run brought Winthrop within five points, but it was unable to get any closer as Georgia Southern pushed its lead to double digits en route to the 64-55 victory.

Winthrop had three players finish in double-figures, led by Kem Nwabudu with 16 points.  Essence Cowan and Courtney Hagaman each added 11 points.  Anika Riley led Winthrop with nine rebounds.

Winthrop shot 39 percent from the field for the game but only 29 percent in the second half.  Georgia Southern shot 46 percent for the game and 63 percent in the second half.  Georgia Southern pulled down 33 rebounds to Winthrop's 32.

Winthrop closes out the 2018 year and its non-conference schedule with a 2 p.m. contest Friday afternoon against the Western Carolina Catamounts.
