ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's basketball team fell 67-63 Saturday morning to the Newberry College Wolves at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Winthrop fell to 1-3 on the season with the loss. The contest was an exhibition for Newberry as a Division II opponent.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop jumped out to a 4-0 lead to open the contest and the two sides were tied 8-8 with 4:27 remaining in the period. Newberry closed the first quarter on a 12-4 run and held a 20-12 lead after 10 minutes.
The Eagles opened the second quarter by knocking down a three-pointer but the Wolves responded with a 13-3 run and opened its largest lead of the game of 15 points with 4:56 left in the half. Winthrop was able to get back within seven with 2:42 remaining but another run by the Wolves sent Newberry into the break with a 39-28 advantage.
Newberry pushed its lead back to 15 only 90 seconds into the third quarter before the Eagles started to cut into the lead. Winthrop cut the deficit down to only 5 with 2:16 left in the third quarter and trailed 52-45 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Winthrop came out in the fourth quarter and scored the first six points to take a 54-52 lead with 8:09 on the clock. Newberry responded with a 9-0 run, regaining a 61-54 lead. The Eagles got within three with 84 seconds left but three straight blocks by the Wolves kept Winthrop off the board as Newberry won 67-63.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Anika Riley and
Kem Nwabudu each recorded double-doubles. Riley finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Nwabudu added 10 points and 10 boards.
Maleeah Langstaff scored 11 points and picked up seven rebounds.
Meg Essex finished with 20 points for the Wolves with Shelby Britten adding 19 and Regan McCarty scoring 15 and pulling down 13 boards.
Winthrop shot 29 percent from the field while the Wolves knocked down 50 percent of their shots. The Eagles won the rebounding battle 44-37.

Winthrop will be on the road for its next four contests starting with an in-state matchup against the Wofford Terriers Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
