ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team suffered a tough 2-1 overtime loss Saturday afternoon to the Radford Highlanders at Eagle Field.
Winthrop falls to 7-5-1 on the season and 3-3 in the Big South with the loss while the Highlanders improve to 8-2-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Radford got on the scoresheet first in the 20
th minute on a tally from Reese Degnan. Degnan found herself with time and space just outside of the penalty area, took two touches to the inside and sent a shot from 25 yards out into the left side of the goal.
Winthrop responded with the equalizer in the 24
th minute.
Gabi Hull drew a foul just across the midfield stripe that
Arryana Daniels stepped up to serve into the box. Daniels' free kick floated just inside the penalty area where
Allie Thomas got her head to the ball amongst two defenders and her flick went towards the right side of the goal, past a diving Radford netminder for the tying goal.
Both sides created a couple opportunities in the second half but neither could put one in the back of the net.
In the overtime period, Winthrop got the first quality scoring chance. After successive corner kicks, the Eagles had a header and a shot blocked on their way to goal. Moments later, Radford also had a corner kick that bounced around the penalty area before being cleared away. Off of the ensuing throw, Jessica Wollmann dribbled just outside of the 18-yard box and laid a ball off to Gabi Paupst who hit a ball along the ground that found its way into the bottom left corner for the game winner.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Radford outshot the Eagles 23-16, putting 11 on frame while the Eagles put four on goal. The Highlanders held a commanding 12-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Allie Thomas finished the game with four shot while
Gabi Hull,
Katie Colwick and
Laurin Uptegrove each tallied two.
Kelly Horan finished with nine saves in goal for the Eagles.
WHAT'S UP NEXT
The Eagles head back out on the road Wednesday to face the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in a 6 p.m. contest before returning home for Senior Day, hosting High Point, next Saturday at 1 p.m.
