HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was a fairly even back-and-forth battle with each side having scoring opportunities. High Point dominated possession early in the period with all three of its shots in the opening 15 minutes. Winthrop started to settle in and created a couple chances towards the end of the first half but neither team was able to convert a chance.
After more than 35 minutes of competitive play in the second half, High Point broke through in the 81
st minute. A free kick from just inside the midline, was played forward to Skylar Prillaman who put it past
Kelly Horan.
Winthrop found the equalizer in the 85
th minute. After a High Point attack,
Lexi Sheely took possession of the ball nearly 100 yards from the opposing goal. She dribbled through the midfield, beating a couple High Point players into the penalty area and finished with a crossing shot to the left.
Just over a minute into the overtime period, the Eagles pushed the ball into the attacking penalty area.
Natalie Royaards pushed the ball to
Allie Thomas who laid it back to an on-running
Gabi Hull. As Hull looked to get a shot off, she was fouled from behind and a penalty kick was awarded. Leising stepped up and put the kick to the left of the goalie for the game-winner.
