ASHEVILLE, NC – A late comeback attempt came up just short Monday afternoon as the Winthrop women's soccer team fell 2-1 on the road to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs (3-6-4, 2-3-2) opened the scoring in the 16
th minute. Skyler Chillson took a cross-field pass and dribbled inside the 18-yard box and took a shot to the far side that snuck into the back post for the 1-0 lead. UNC Asheville increased its lead to two in the 35
th minute as Justine James beat an on-rushing
Kelly Horan and placed the ball into an empty net.
Winthrop (8-6-1, 4-4) had a number of scoring opportunities in the first half with its best coming in the 21
st minute.
Natalie Royaards dribbled into the penalty area, beating one defender. As she passed the ball towards the middle to
Allie Thomas she was tripped but the referee waved off the appeal. Thomas was able to get a shot off but it was saved, one of four for the Asheville goalie in the opening 45 minutes.
The Eagles finally broke through in the 73
rd minute. Alyssa Fernadez was fouled just outside of the penalty area and
Keeley Leising struck the free kick on goal. The Asheville goalie took the ball in her hands but as she hit the ground the ball game loose and
Clara Conboy was on the spot to put the rebound into the net. The Eagles managed a few more chances in the closing minutes but couldn't find the equalizer.

Clara Conboy's goal was her first of the season and third of her career.
Allie Thomas led the Eagles with four shots while
Gabi Hull added three. Winthrop outshot Asheville 14-9 including 9-3 on shots on target.

The Eagles close out a tough stretch of three games in five days on Wednesday as Winthrop welcomes Charleston Southern to Eagle Field for a 6 p.m. kick.
