ROCK HILL, SC – Charleston Southern picked up a 78
th minute goal Wednesday evening to down the Winthrop women's soccer team 1-0 at Eagle Field.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 8-7-1 on the year and 4-5 in the Big South while the Buccaneers improve to 8-4-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was an evenly played period with both sides having scoring opportunities. Winthrop outshot the Buccaneers 8-4 with the Eagles placing one shot on frame while CSU put all four of their shots off target.
Charleston Southern took hold offensively in the second half, outshooting the Eagles 10-3. Winthrop's best chance came in the 74
th minute as a free kick served into the box by
Dylan Patterson was headed just wide left by
Alyssa Fernandez. The Buccaneers found the game-winner in the 78
th minute. An initial shot went off the crossbar after an initial save from
Kelly Horan. The ball bounced inside the six-yard box and was eventually tapped home by Peyton Motley.

Charleston Southern finished with a 14-11 advantage on shots, forcing Horan to make three saves while the Eagles put two shots on target.
Gabi Hull finished with three shots while
Alyssa Fernandez fired off two.

The Eagles close out the regular season on the road at Longwood on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start against the Lancers. Winthrop will then wait for final Big South standings to find out its tournament seeding as the rest of the conference will close out the season on Tuesday, October 23.
