Volleyball Bests USC Upstate In Four Sets

Rock Hill, SC – The Eagles rebounded from their loss last night to beat USC Upstate in four sets (25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20). This makes it a season sweep of the Spartans and Winthrop maintains third place in the conference standing. This win moves the Eagles to 8-4 in conference and 12-12 overall, the Spartans drop to 6-6 and 11-16.

How It Happened
The Eagles trailed through the first set before a kill from Phoebe Wu and an error from Upstate tied the set at 22-22. From there, the Eagles went on a 3-0 run to claim the first set victory. Lou Rosario had six kills and hit a .333 hitting efficiency and Carlie Skelton had 11 digs.

The Eagles once again started the set down until tying the score at nine all. A four-point run sparked by a kill from Wu put them up 13-9. The Spartans fought back to tie the set at 14 points apiece, then took the lead and went on to win the set.

In the third set the Eagles took back the momentum and jumped to a 6-1 lead. Makayla Doyle put up a dominate block for the match and put pressure on the Upstate attackers. Doyle had a big block on Upstate's Emily Russell to give the Eagles a five-point, 18-13 lead. They lead by as many as seven points, 20-13, in this set. A block from Lily Leistiko sealed the third set victory for the Eagles, putting them up 2-1 in the match.

Both teams battled in the fourth set, but the Eagles maintained the upper hand throughout. Wu led the Eagles offense with 13 kills while also picking up 17 digs for a double-double. Doyle added 12 kills (.250), three block assists, and three solo blocks. Carlie Skelton finished with 23 digs and Hannah Lackey added in 15.
