Charleston SC – Phoebe Wu had a huge performance with 20 kills (.300) and 18 digs to help the Eagles to a four-set win over Charleston Southern (29-27, 25-16, 23-25, 25-13). This win puts the Eagles at 9-4 in conference play and one step closer to the conference tournament; the Buccaneers drop to 5-8.
How It Happened
The Eagles began the first set down 3-0 before a kill from
Lily Leistiko put them on the scoreboard. They trailed by as many as eight points in the set and let the Buccaneers get to their first set point 24-19. The Eagles went on a 5-0 run to tie the set at 24 all. After three more lead changes another kill from Leistiko officially topped off Winthrop's comeback to win the first set. Wu finished with eight kills and a .400 hitting percentage.
The Eagles carried the momentum into the second set starting off with a stuff block from
Makayla Doyle and jumping out to a 5-1 lead. CSU fought back to tie the set at 11-11 but a 4-point run put the Eagles up 16-12. An out of rotation confusion on Charleston Southern's side briefly delayed the game at 23-15. A pair of kills from
Jace Kleffner and Doyle secured the second set victory.
In the third set the Buccaneers picked up their defensive efforts and the Eagle attackers struggled to find the floor. The Eagles almost repeated the comeback they completed in the first set but came up just short. In the fourth set, the Eagles were not letting the Buccaneers take anything easily. A resounding kill from Kleffner pushed their lead to eight points, 20-12. The Buccaneers only scored once more in the set allowing the Eagles to cruise to a match victory. Doyle finished with 14 kills (.265) and four blocks,
Hannah Lackey picked up 17 digs and
Savannah Roper added in 15 more.
