Game Recap
- The Tar Heel had a great chance to go on top 1-0 in the 8th minute after being awarded a penalty but freshman Aidan McCormick saved it to keep the game scoreless
- UNC did break through a few minutes later when Jack Skahan scored on a header off a cross from John Nelson in the 11th minute
- Trailing 1-0 nearing the half, the Eagles put together some offensive pressure as Miles Rapp had a shot sail high in the 36th minute followed by two corner kicks in the 39th minute
- Right out of the half Leif Estevez looked to tie the game as he fired a shot 48 seconds into the half but James Pyle made his only save to keep the Eagles scoreless
- The Tar Heels took control of the match early in the second half with three goals in a eight and a half minute span
- Giovanni Montesdeoca made it 2-0 in the 50 minutes as he scored on a header at the back post off a cross from Mauricio Pineda
- Skahan scored his second of the game in the 56th minute as he was set up by Montesdeoca
- In the 58th minute Skahan completed the hat trick as he took a pass from Jeremy Kelly in the box and scored

- McCormick made his third career start and finished with six saves
- Winthrop fell 4-0 to UNC for the second straight season after its previous five meetings against ACC opponents were one-goal games
- North Carolina entered last week ranked #1 but a loss at North Carolina State dropped them to #5 when the rankings for the United Soccer Coaches was released Tuesday morning
- It is the second straight year the Eagles have faced the Tar Heels while they're ranked in the Top 5
