Women's Basketball Falls 78-45 On the Road to Presbyterian Tuesday

CLINTON, SC – The Winthrop women's basketball team dropped a Big South contest Tuesday evening 78-45 on the road to the Presbyterian Blue Hose.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Winthrop (1-17, 0-7) has a strong start to the first quarter.  After going down 3-0, the Eagles went on an 11-0 run to take an 11-3 lead.  Presbyterian chipped away at the Eagle lead as Winthrop held a 15-13 advantage after the opening 10 minutes.

Presbyterian (6-12, 3-4) opened the second quarter on a 12-0 run and extended it to a 17-3 run.  The Blue Hose matched the Eagles over the final four minutes of the half and took a 35-24 lead into the break.

The Blue Hose continued its dominating play into the third quarter, starting the half on an 18-2 run to open a 27-point advantage with just under six minutes gone in the half.  Winthrop limited the Blue Hose to only three points over the final four minutes of the quarter but could only manage nine points of its own and trailed 56-35 heading into the final quarter.

Presbyterian got to the free-throw line early in the fourth quarter and limited the Eagles to only 10 points in the final stanza en route to the 78-45 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Courtney Hagaman was the only Eagle to reach double-figure scoring, her sixth such feat in seven conference contests.  Anika Riley pulled down nine rebounds to lead the team.

Winthrop shot 31 percent from the field after shooting 42 percent in the first quarter.  The Eagles connected on only 25 percent of their three-point attempts and were outrebounded by the Blue Hose 41-34.

WHAT'S UP NEXT

The Eagles return home for their next two Big South contests starting with a 5 p.m. matchup against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs Saturday afternoon.
