ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's basketball team made a late charge against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs Saturday but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 66-59 at the Winthrop Coliseum.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Gardner-Webb (14-6, 4-4) grabbed the first six points of the contest and continued to lead by six at 11-5 before the Eagles started chipping away at the deficit. Winthrop tied the game twice and was finally able to take the lead at 16-15 and led 19-17 after the opening quarter.
Winthrop (1-18, 0-8) struggled to score in the second quarter. After the Eagles scored five point in the opening 2:04 of the second quarter, Winthrop went scoreless for the remainder of the period. Gardner-Webb scored 11 unanswered point and led 30-24 at the half.
The Bulldogs scored the first eight points of the third quarter before Winthrop was able to put an end to its scoreless drought with seven minutes on the clock. The Eagles then got hot from the floor hitting six of their next seven shots and went into the fourth down only 48-42.

Emily Kelley led the Eagles with 17 points while Anika Riley added 12 points and pulled down six rebounds. The Eagles shot 44 percent from the floor and 33 percent from three-point range. Winthrop was able to outrebound the Bulldogs 38-31.

Winthrop remains at home for its next contest as the Eagles will host the Longwood Lancers Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
