Women's Basketball Falls 70-48 To UNC Asheville Saturday

ROCK HILL, SCCourtney Hagaman narrowly missed a double-double Saturday with 13 points and nine rebounds but the Winthrop women's basketball team fell 70-48 at home to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs.

Winthrop fell to 1-16 overall and 0-6 in the conference with the loss while the Bulldogs improved to 8-9 overall and 5-1 in the Big South.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both sides got off to a slow start in the first quarter with only one point between them through the first three minutes.  The Bulldogs and Eagles then started trading buckets and UNC Asheville led 8-7 with just under four minutes remaining.  The Bulldogs then closed the half on a 12-0 run to take a 20-7 lead.

Winthrop's scoring slump continued into the second quarter as the Eagles went a total of more than eight minutes without a point.  In that time UNC Asheville increased their lead to as much as 20.  The Eagles were able to claw back slightly before the half, closing the second quarter on a 6-0 run to trail 32-17 at the break.

UNC Asheville dominated the third quarter.  The Bulldogs outscored the Eagles 27-9 in the third and led 59-26 heading into the final quarter.  The Eagles came out much stronger offensively in the fourth quarter, doubling up the Bulldogs on the scoreboard 22-11.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Hagaman's 13 points tied for the team lead as Ronata Rogers also tallied 13 points.  Anika Riley added eight points in the loss.  Winthrop shot 35 percent from the floor for the game including 33 percent from three-point range.

WHAT'S UP NEXT

The Eagles will take a trip to Clinton, SC for their next contest.  Winthrop and the Presbyterian Blue Hose will square off Tuesday at 7 p.m. inside the Templeton Center.
