Eagles Fall 81-45 At Charleston Southern Tuesday After Second-Half Scoring Slump

NORTH CHARELSTON, SC – The Winthrop women's basketball team was held to only 18 second-half points Tuesday night as the Charleston Southern Buccaneers downed the Eagles 81-45 inside the Buc Dome.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Winthrop (1-15, 0-5) started the game strong, scoring seven of the first nine points.  Charleston Southern (7-9, 2-3) bounced back with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 7-7.  After the Eagles scored a quick four points, the Buccaneers closed the first quarter on a 9-3 run to lead 16-14 after the opening 10 minutes.

The Eagles scored more than half of their points in the second quarter from the charity stripe.  Winthrop knocked down three shots from the field for six points and converted seven free throws.  Charleston Southern outscored the Eagles 15-13 in the second quarter and took a 31-27 lead into the break.

Charleston Southern dominated the third quarter.  The Buccaneers opened the quarter on an 11-0 run and ultimately limited the Eagles to only eight points while scoring 30 of their own to take a 61-35 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Buccaneers continued to clamp down on defense in the fourth quarter as the Eagles were held to only three points in the first four minutes.  Charleston Southern outscored the Eagles 20-10 in the fourth quarter en route to the 81-45 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Courtney Hagaman recorded her fourth straight game in double-digit scoring, finishing with a team-high 16 points.  Walk-on Samariya Fantt was second on the team with seven points and tied for the team high with six rebounds.

Winthrop shot only 29 percent from the field and connected on a season-low one three-pointer out of 14 long-range chances.  The Eagles' 20 turnovers were converted into 25 points by the Buccaneers.

The Eagles return to the Winthrop Coliseum for a 2 p.m. contest Saturday against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs.
