ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop Volleyball team defeated Gardner-Webb 3-1 on Saturday at the Winthrop Coliseum.

- Sophomore Sydney Gunter led the Eagles with 16 Kills and a .297 hitting percentage
- Sophomore Siani Yamaguchi helped the Eagles with 43 assists and 12 digs and four kills
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
- Gardner-Webb started on a 6-2 run until Winthrop worked its way back to tie it at 6-6
- Both teams kept it close with only a team being up by three the rest of the set
- The Bulldogs won the set with a kill by Nicole Celarek
Set 2
- Winthrop started on a 12-6 run
- The Eagles finished on a 13-9 run with back to back kills by senior Keaupono Fey to win 25-15
Set 3
- The Eagles were on their game when they went up 12-6 to start the third set
- With Winthrop up 23-15, the Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run to force Winthrop to call a timeout
- A kill by junior Phoebe Wu led the Eagles to a 25-21 win
Set 4
- Winthrop and Gardner-Webb started the set tied 6-6
- Winthrop went on a 13-0 run to make it 19-6
- The Eagles finished on a 19-7 run to win the set 25-13

The Eagles will be traveling to Orangeburg, SC where they finish non-conference play against South Carolina State on Tuesday Oct. 3 beginning at 6 p.m.
