GOLDEN GOAL: Ramirez Lifts Eagles To 1-0 Win At Longwood In Overtime

Ramirez Nets First Collegiate Goal

FARMVILLE, VA--  Charlie Ramirez picked the perfect time for his first career goal as he headed home the golden goal in the 94th minute to lift Winthrop to a 1-0 road win at Longwood Saturday evening.

Game Recap
  • Just shy of 20 minutes into the match the Eagles had a wave of chances
  • Leif Estevez started it with a shot in the box that was saved and turned into the first corner of three in a 35 second span
  • Off the second corner Marc Carreras had a shot blocked that went out for a corner
  • Rasmus Arousell nearly gave the Eagles the lead late in the first half as his shot from around the top of the box was just wide of the left post as it flew by goalkeeper Lance Da Silva
  • Longwood nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 52nd minute as Connor Rea struck a shot first time off a cross from about eight yards out at the back post and Kenneth Perkinson just tipped it wide for a corner
  • Perkinson kept the game scoreless in the 75th minute as Longwood's Sammy Dupuy had a free header just outside the six straight on from goal as Perkinson dropped down quickly to make the save as the defense cleared the rebound
  • In the 84th minute Carreras ripped a shot on goal off a corner and Francesco Tiozzo tried to bury the rebound but his shot inside the six-yard box is high
  • Nil Vinyals hit the post in the 86th minute as he hit a cross first time toward goal the made its way through, hit the back post and bounced out
  • In the final seconds of regulation Michael Smith broke free down the right side as he cut back toward goal he ripped a shot to try and beat the clock, but it was right at the Da Silva who bobbled the initial shot and the jumped on the rebound
  • The Eagles served a ball into the box that was headed straight in the air by a Longwood defender as Charlie Ramirez ran on and headed the ball into the left corner of the goal from about seven yards out from goal (It is the first career goal for Ramirez)

  • The Eagles are now 1-1-1 on the year in overtime games
  • The last Eagle to score a golden goal is Ramirez's defensive teammate Francesco Tiozzo when he netted the game-winner at Wofford on Sept. 4, 2016 
  • Perkinson finished with four saves to earn his third shutout on the season

Looking Ahead
The Eagles will return home as they'll host Campbell on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. It will be a full, eventful day at Eagle Field as the women's soccer team will host Presbyterian College at 1 p.m. In between the men's and the women's game the Rock Hill Fire Department and the Rock Hill Police Department will square off in a charity kickball game on Eagle Field. Donations for the charity will be accepted during all three events on the day.
