TROY, AL – Sophomore Sydney Gunter combined for 26 kills as the Winthrop Volleyball team wins both games on Friday against Northwestern State and Jackson State.

EAGLES HIGHLIGHTS (AGAINST NORTHWESTERN STATE)

• Sydney Gunter led the Eagles with 15 kills out of 28 total attacks with a .393 hitting percent.
• Senior Keaupono Fey was the other hitter to help Winthrop with 13 kills out of 26 total attacks and two blocks.

 
EAGLES HIGHLIGHTS (AGAINST JACKSON STATE)

• Sophomore Sydney Gunter led the Eagles with 11 kills with a .688 hitting percent and zero errors.
• Sophomore Jace Kleffner helped Winthrop as she had 9 kills with a .333 hitting percent

 
HOW IT HAPPENED (AGAINST NORTHWESTERN STATE)
Set 1

• Winthrop and Northwestern State were close in the beginning until the Demons went on a 7-1 run and were up 16-9
• The Eagles fought back but never threaten as Northwestern State won the first set 25-19

Set 2

• The Eagles found their rhythm in the second set as they started the set on a 7-3 run.
• Winthrop ended the set on a 11-5 run to win the set 25-17 after sophomore Jace Kleffner had a kill.  

Set 3

• Winthrop started the set on a 8-4 run
• Northwestern State tied it up at 9 before going on a 8-2 run
• The Demons went on to win the set 25-17

Set 4

• Winthrop was up 20-15 and was cruising in to force a set 5 but Northwestern went on a 8-1 run to go ahead 23-21
• Both teams kept it neck to neck until Keaupono Fey had a kill to make it 28-27 and a service ace by sophomore Hanna Spevak to win 29-27

 Set 5

• Winthrop started the set on a 5-3 run before Northwestern tied up and went up 8-7
• The Eagles then pulled away to make it 13-10 and then won the set 15-11

 
HOW IT HAPPENED (AGAINST JACKSON STATE)
 
Set 1

• The Eagles started on a 7-0 run
• Winthrop allowed only 9 points for Jackson State as they we on to win 25-9

 Set 2

• Jackson State made the second set interesting as they came back from being down 9-6 to go up on Winthrop 17-12
• The Eagles fought back to tie it and go up 24-20 after going on a run 12-3
• Winthrop let Jackson State take the next three points to make it 24-23 before the Eagles closed the door on the set with a kill by Jace Kleffner

Set 3

• The Eagles and Jackson State fought back and forth to start off the set
• Winthrop eventually pulled away from Jackson State as they went on a 16-6 run to win 25-14
