HUNTSVILLE, AL – The Winthrop women's soccer team limited Alabama A&M to only one shot Sunday afternoon as the Eagles downed the Bulldogs 2-0 to earn its first victory of the season.
With the victory, Winthrop improved to 1-0-1 while Alabama A&M fell to 0-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore Allie Thomas got the scoring started in the 30th minute on an assist from Gianna Giroux. Sophomore Gabi Hull sealed the victory on a goal in the 83rd minute on a feed from freshman Katie Colwick.
CLEAN SHEET
After coming close to her first career collegiate shutout Friday evening, sophomore goalie Kelly Horan secured her first clean sheet against the Bulldogs.
STATS OF NOTE
Winthrop's defense shut down Alabama A&M, keeping the Bulldogs to only one shot which Horan was able to keep out of the net. Hull's goal in the 83rd minute came off a hard-working performance as she finished with six shots with five going on frame. Winthrop finished with 10 corners while the Bulldogs earned none.
NEXT TIME OUT
Winthrop will take a break from game action this week as classes begin. The Eagles will return home for their next contest as Winthrop hosts North Florida on Sunday, August 27 at 1 p.m.
