ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw Friday evening against Kennesaw State in the team's season opener at Eagle Field.
The records for the Eagles and Owls both stand at 0-0-1 on the young season. Winthrop will have a quick turnaround as the Eagles head to Alabama A&M for a 3 p.m. start on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop went up 1-0 in the 76th minute as sophomore Gianna Giroux found the back of the net off a free kick. From 30 yards out, Giroux ripped a shot toward goal that ricocheted off a Kennesaw defender and beat the keeper into the net.
Kennesaw State tied the game in the 87th minute as Ashtah Das knocked a shot from the side of the 18-yard box over the outstretched hand of Winthrop goalie Kelly Horan and into the side netting.
STATS OF NOTE
Sophomore Gabi Hull along with Giroux each finished with three shots. Horan, in her first collegiate start, finished with three saves while allowing just one goal.
NEXT TIME AT EAGLE FIELD
Following their trip to Alabama, the Eagles will return home to Eagles Field on Sunday, August 27 for a 1 p.m. contest against North Florida.
