ROCK HILL, SC – Junior
Mitch Spires RBI single in the 8th inning lifted the Winthrop to a win 4-3 over Wofford College, Tuesday night at The Winthrop Ballpark.
The Eagles improve to 27-18 and will have another non-conference contest on Wednesday when it faces Davidson at BB&T Ballpark with the first pitch scheduled for 6:10 p.m.. Wofford falls to 25-24 this season.
With the game tied 3-3 in the 8th, Winthrop sophomore
Grant English was hit by a pitch with one out to get things going. Freshman
Jason Crumley entered to pinch run and moved to second on a single to right by senior
Anthony Paulsen singled to right. Crumley then scored off the single to right by Spires, who took a rip at the first pitch..
Paulsen led the Eagles at the plate as he went 2-for-4, Spires was 1-for-3, and sophomore
Brandon Fite went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Freshman
Zach Peek earned his fourth win (4-1) of the season as tossed 3.1 innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits. Sophomore
Dalton Whitaker earned his seventh save of the season. The Terriers Jake Hershman suffered the loss and falls to 1-1 as he pitched 5.1 innings, allowed one run on three hits.
Winthrop scored three in the bottom of the second to grab an early lead. Sophomore
Hunter Lipscomb walked, senior
Babe Thomas singled to center that advanced Lipscomb to second. Winthrop's first run came when Lipscomb scored on a wild pitch and then Thomas scored on a single by Fite. Freshman
Scout McFalls made it 3-0 with an RBI single that scored
Jake Sullivan.
Wofford got on the board in the top of sixth when McClain doubled to left. Brett Walsh walked, After each moved over a base on a steal, both scored on a double by Mack Nathanson. Nathanson advanced to third on a stolen base and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Reed Massy.
