CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winthrop baseball team fell 7-6 to Davidson in 10 innings during midweek action at BB&T Ballpark.
The Eagles fall to 27-19 while Davidson improves to 25-22. Winthrop will host Big South foe Campbell this weekend in a three-game series starting Friday at 6 p.m.
Davidson won in the bottom of the 10
th on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Brett Centracchio. Eric Jones singled to center and Justin
Lebek was hit by a pitch before a single from Jake
Sidwell to load the bases.
Winthrop's Jason
Crumley (0-1) suffered the loss as he went two innings, allowing one run on two hits. The Wildcats Austin Leonard (1-1) earned the win as he tossed 2.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits.
Junior
Mitch Spires led the Eagles at the plate when he went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Sophomore
Hunter Lipscomb went 2-for-4 with one run, and sophomore
Jake Sullivan went 2-for-4 with one run.
Davidson got on the board in the bottom of the first when Cam Johnson started the game off with a single to left, and scored on a home run to left by Will Robertson. Alec Acosta singled to right and scored on a home run to left by Brian
Fortier.
Winthrop got on the board in the top of the third when Sullivan scored on an error by shortstop. Sullivan singled to start the inning off, advanced to second on a single by sophomore Matthew
Mulkey, and scored from a fielder's choice from sophomore
Grant English.
The Wildcats add insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Robertson doubled in left, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by Acosta.
The Eagles scored three in the top of the sixth. English started things off with a double to left center and then senior
Anthony Paulsen walked. Spires doubled to left to score English and Paulsen. Spires advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Lipscomb, and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior
Babe Thomas to left.
Davidson added more insurance in the bottom of the seventh with a home run by Robertson.
Winthrop tied the game in the top of the eighth as Lipscomb got things started with a single to left center. Junior
Tyler Halstead was hit by a pitch, and both scored on a single by Brandon
Fite that went right under the left fielders legs to advance
Fite to third.
