ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop baseball captured its sixth straight Big South victory with a 7-5 win over Campbell, Friday afternoon in the opening game of a three-game series at The Winthrop Ballpark.
The Eagles are now 28-19 overall and 14-5 in the Big South. Campbell falls to 22-27 overall and 7-12 in the league. The two teams will square off again on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
Leading 4-3 in the sixth, the Eagles created some separation with three more runs for a 7-3 lead. With runners on second and third and one out,
Matthew Mulkey singled up the middle, scoring both runs for a 6-3 lead.
Grant English followed with an RBI single down the right field line to make it 7-3.
The Eagles fell behind 3-0 in the third inning, but responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the third. The first run scored on an error by the first baseman as
Jake Sullivan scored on the play. Then
Mitch Spires and
Hunter Lipscomb each delivered RBI singles to tie the game. Winthrop grabbed a 4-3 lead in the fifth when Lipscomb came through again with an RBI single to left.
Winthrop starter
Reece Green (5-3) tossed six innings allowing three unearned runs on eight hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.
Dalton Whitaker tossed 0.2 inning allowing one hit as he recorded his eighth save of the year.
Campbell's A. Winans fell to 3-6 on the year as he allowed seven runs (four earned) on 11 hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Lipscomb finished the game with three hits and two RBI while Mulked had two runs, two hits and two RBI. English was 1-for-4 as he extended his streak of reaching base to 21 games.
