ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team fell 11-5 to Campbell in game two of a three-game series, Saturday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark.
The Eagles are now 28-20 overall and 14-6 in the Big South. Campbell improves to 23-28 overall and 8-12 in the league. The two teams will square off again on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 pm.
Campbell led 3-2 in the seventh, when it scored eight runs. There were two errors in the inning that helped aided in the big inning plus a bases clearing triple by Ben Calvano to make it 11-2.
Winthrop got on the board first in the bottom of the first when it started the inning with three straight singles, the third of which scored
Matthew Mulkey from second on the hit by
Anthony Paulsen.
Mitch Spires hit a sacrifice fly to right to make it 2-0.
The Camels cut the lead in half in the second when Zach Minnick hit a solo home run to left and then took the lead in the top of the sixth when Jeff Hahs hit a solo home run to center to make it 3-2.
Winthrop starter
Nate Pawelczyk (7-2) suffered the loss as he pitched six innings, allowing five runs on four hits and struck out six. Campbell's Wes Noble (4-2) earned the win as he threw six innings, allowing two runs on six hits and struck out six.
Grant English led the Eagles at the plate as he had three hits and one RBI. Paulsen went 2-for-5 with an RBI and
Brandon Fite went 2-for-3.
