ROCK HILL, SC – Senior
Anthony Paulsen's solo home run that gave Winthrop 2-1 lead in the seventh innings, but the Eagles were not able to hold on as they lost to Albany 3-2 on Friday night in their first game of the Tidelands Health Classic at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Winthrop (4-4) has lost four straight while Albany (3-2) bounced back from a morning lost to San Francisco. The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. when they take on San Francisco and Coastal Carolina at Springs Brooks Stadium.
In addition to Paulsen solo homer, sophomore
Hunter Lipscomb went 2 for 5 with one RBI.
Winthrop senior
Reece Green (1-1) suffered the loss as he pitched 8.2 innings, allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out 10. Albany pitcher Dominic Savino (1-0) earned the win as he threw three innings, allowed no runs on one hit with one strike out and a walk.
The Eagles got on the board first in the top of the third when sophomore
Brandon Fite was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on a Lipscomb single to right field.
The Great Danes tied it up in the bottom of the fourth when Matt Hinchy walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on a single by Connor Powers to left field.
Winthrop took the lead in the top of the seventh when Paulsen hit a solo home run to right center.
Albany scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Sacks singled, advanced to second on a walk by Evan Harasta, who was then taken out for pitch runner Nick Kondo. Sacks advanced to third on a fielder's choice groundout. After Garrett Longhurst pitch ran for Matt Codispoti at first, Travis Collins singled to score Sacks with the tying run. Winthrop sophomore
Nate Pawelczyk entered the game in relief for Green, immediately hit Eric Muller with a pitch to load the bases, and then walked Patrick Lagravinese that forced the winning run.
