Softball Welcomes Longwood For Weekend Series Starting Friday Night

ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop looks to get back on track in Big South Conference action as it hosts Longwood for a three-game series beginning with a single-game Friday, Mar. 31 at 7 p.m. on Terry Field. On Saturday the team's will play a doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS LONGWOOD
The Eagles and Lancers have met 18 times with Longwood leading the all-time series 11-5. Since Longwood began competing in the Big South for softball in 2013, the Eagles are 3-11. The Eagles have dropped the last six meetings, including the last meeting in the Big South Tournament last year (L, 13-5).

A GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
Winthrop is coming off a doubleheader split at Coastal Carolina, handing the Chanticleers just their sixth loss at home in 30 games. Sophomore Kiley Majette tossed the final four innings of the game allowing a run on four hits to earn the win as she's now 8-9 on the year. Majette leads the team in starts and appearances and has been called on more recently with the absence of Keleigh Romine to injury. Romine, who is 3-4 on the year in 12 starts (16 appearances) with a 3.27 ERA and is expected to return this weekend in some capacity. Junior Maddie Antone continues to bat over .400 (.407) and lead the offense with eight doubles and 23 RBI. Freshman Ashley Westbrooks joined Antone in the 20-RBI club as she now has 20 after driving in two during the Coastal doubleheader. Senior Paige Haley leads the team with 23 runs and is third on the team with a .300 average.

MAKING THEIR MARK
Leah Young, Maddie Antone and Paige Haley are leaving their marks in the Winthrop history books. Young became the 15th player in program history to reach 80 RBI in a career and Antone became the 16th. Young has 18 career home runs, which ranks 8th all-time and Antone is 10th all-time with 17. Young hit her 10th career triple against Western Carolina, becoming the sixth player in program history to reach 10 or more as she's tied for 5th all-time. Haley ranks 25th all-time in hits with 131 and is the team's active leader as Antone has 125 and Young has 109. Antone is currently the program's all-time leader in on-base percentage for a career at .481, pushing Lisa Kingsmore to second at .443. Haley with 58 career walks is now tied for 10th all-time at Winthrop.  
 
A GLANCE AT THE LANCERS
Longwood is the preseason favorite to win the Big South Conference and repeat as champions. The Lancers are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Virginia on Tuesday and have won four straight since dropping its league opening series at Campbell. Longwood is currently 9th in the league as a team in batting average of .229 but first in the league with a team ERA of 2.99.

MAJETTE NAMED BIG SOUTH PITCHER OF THE WEEK (2nd TIME THIS SEASON)
Kiley Majette was named the Big South Conference Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 20 It is the second time this season Majette has garnered the weekly honor. She went 2-0 on the week in four relief appearances as she posted a 0.54 ERA with no walks and 12 strikeouts in 13 innings. She allowed six hits on the week with just one going for extra bases. Majette threw 2.0 innings, allowed a hit, one unearned run with no walks and two strikeouts at Jacksonville State. In game one of the series against Presbyterian, Majette tossed the final two innings as she gave up one hit (no runs) and tallied five strikeouts. She earned the win in game two vs. PC as she tossed 5.1 innings. She allowed one hit (no runs) with no walks and tallied three strikeouts. She then tossed the final 3.2 innings of game three to earn another win as she allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
Winthrop is picked to finish seventh in the Big South Conference preseason poll, but has expectations of being toward the top of the league. With the addition of Antone and the consistency of Paige Haley through her career at the plate along with the emergence of Leah Young, Morgan Lowers and Blake Wallert the Eagles expect to have a lot more firepower up and down the lineup than the last few years.
