CLEMSON, SC – The Winthrop baseball team lost a heartbreaker to fifth-ranked Clemson on Wednesday night as the Eagles fell 6-5 in 11 innings at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The Eagles (13-12, 5-1 BSC) tied up the game at 5-5 in the top of the ninth inning when senior
Anthony Paulsen doubled to left center to drive home sophomore
Brandon Fite.. Clemson (22-4, 8-1 ACC) scored the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh inning when Reed Rohlman's walk-off single to center brought home Weston Jackson from third. Winthrop had two runners on in the 10
th, but could not get the go-ahead run home.
The loss took some of the luster off a strong offensive night at the plate by sophomore outfielder
Matthew Mulkey who went 3 for 4 with three extra base hits, including two doubles and a home run, to go along with two RBI.
Mitch Spires kept his hitting streak going as he had a 2 for 5 game and one RBI to extend his hit streak to 18 straight games. Paulsen also went 2 for 5 with the double and one RBI.
Winthrop will fly to Omaha, NE on Thursday where the Eagles will play Creighton in a three-game series at TD Ameritrade Stadium, the home of the College World Series.

Dalton Whitaker (1-2) suffered the loss as he went three innings and allowed one run on three hits. Ryan Miller (1-0) earned the win as he went 1.2 innings for the Tigers.
Clemson scored first in the bottom of the first when Seth Beer singled to left, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored off of a single by Chris Williams.
The Eagles answered with four runs—a single run in the second, two more in the third, and one in the fourth. Mulkey doubled home senior
Babe Thomas, who had reached on a single, in the second inning. The two runs in the third came home on sacrifice flies by Spires and sophomore
Hunter Lipscomb, while Mulkey's solo shot to left accounted for the run in the fourth.
The Tigers tied it up in the bottom of the fourth when Drew Wharton lifted a sacrifice fly to right center which scored Jackson from third. Grayson Byrd singled to left which scored Logan Davidson from third, and Beer's sacrifice fly scored Cox from third.
Clemson took the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer by Williams to left field.
