CONWAY, SC— Winthrop softball split a doubleheader at former Big South foe Coastal Carolina with a 3-1 loss and 4-3 victory, Tuesday afternoon on Charles Wade-John Lott Field.
The Eagles are now 17-17 on the year while Coastal Carolina is 25-9 on the year. Winthrop will get back to league action this weekend when hit hosts Longwood for a three-game series beginning Friday, Mar. 31 at 7 p.m.
"First game was a good game as we gave them a couple of runs with a couple of bad pitches and the seocnd game was just a really hard-nosed Coastal, Winthrop game," said Winthrop co-head coach
Mark Cooke. "We had really good pitching performances from Kiley (Majette) in both games. We're coming home pretty happy with the way we played. The defense looked really good today."
Ashley Westbrook's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh proved to be the game-winning run in the 4-3 win over Coastal.
The Eagles pushed three runs across the plate in the first as
Leah Young came through with a two-out RBI single and then two runs scored on an error by the third baseman on a grounder by
Morgan Lowers.
Coastal came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth when Adriana Toro singled with the bases loaded with one out, but Majette worked her way out of the jam to keep the game tied before Westbrooks gave the Eagles the lead in the 7
th.
Majette tossed four innings of relief to earn the win as she improved to 8-9 after allowing one run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. She tossed a complete game six innings in game one of the doubleheader allowing three runs on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
In the first game, the Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single from Westbrooks, but Coastal answered right away in the bottom half of the inning. The Chanticleers posted runs in the third and fourth innings on their way to the 3-1 win.
Ashley Guillette earned the win in the circle of game one by allowing just one run on three hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts while Devin Wallace took the loss in game two allowing four runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
