ROCK HILL, SC— Sophomore's
Kiley Majette and
Keleigh Romine combined on a two-hit shutout to lead Winthrop to a 1-0 victory over Longwood, Friday evening in the opening game of a three-game series at Terry Field.
The Eagles improve to 18-17 on the year and 4-2 in the Big South while Longwood falls to 12-17 overall and 1-3 in the league. The teams will be back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they square off in a doubleheader.
We didn't have a lot of hitting today but we had one really good bomb," said Winthrop co-head coach
Mark Cooke. "I thought our pitchers were superb tonight. We wanted to get Kiley out a little early just so we could mix it up. Then Keleigh came in and did her job getting us deep into the game. When the bases got loaded I went back to the left-hander because I thought being at the top of the order as Keleigh's a pop out pitcher where Kiley is a power pitcher, so it worked out good for us. I thought was a terrific ball game, that's a good ball club over there. We hope Kathy Riley (Longwood head coach) feels batter as she wasn't able to make the trip."
Longwood made it interesting in the seventh inning as it loaded the bases, but
Kiley Majette was brought back into the game to try and keep the Eagles in the lead. Majette struck out the first batter and then got a ground out to first on the first pitch to Krista Kelly to end the game.
Both teams turned in strong pitching efforts as the only run of the game came on a solo home run to left by freshman
Ashley Westbrooks in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Majette earned the win in the circle as she is now 9-9 after allowing no runs on one hit with a walk and eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Romine tossed 2.1 innings of relief allowing just one hit as she returned after missing a week with an injury.
Longwood's Sydney Gay tossed a complete game allowing the one run on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
