Strong Team Effort Leads Lacrosse To 10-5 Victory Over Davidson Sunday

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse defense held Davidson to only one first-half goal and the offense found its stride Sunday afternoon as the Eagles downed the Davidson Wildcats 10-5 at Eagle Field.

With the victory, the Eagles improved to 3-5 overall, snapping a two-game losing skid while the Wildcats fell to 2-4 on the season.

In a low-scoring first half, the Eagle struck first with two goals in the opening 10 minutes.  Katherine Judge grabbed the first goal on a feed from Nicole Beatson and then Beatson recorded her own tally on a free-position attempt.  Davidson pulled within 2-1 with just over 18 minutes remaining.

Kristen Shriver gave Winthrop its two-goal edge back on a feed by Ellie Marindin and Beatson capped off the first-half scoring on another free-position goal with 1:19 on the clock and the Eagles took a 4-1 lead into the break.

Davidson came out strong at the start of the second half, scoring two goals in the first six minutes to get within 4-3.  Winthrop responded, scoring the next two from the sticks of Allie Yeager and Beatson to go back up by three.

The Wildcats pulled back within two with just under 20 minutes on the clock before Winthrop rattled off four straight goals, taking a 10-4 lead.  Katie Clark and Beatson each scored one in the stretch while Shriver netted two.  Davidson scored once more with 3:10 remaining but couldn't mount any other charge.

Beatson finished with four goals on five shots and also added two assists.  Shriver finished with three goals and one assist and Ellie Marindin assisted on two Eagle tallies.  Judge led the team with four draw controls and three caused turnovers while Mackenzie Cunningham led the team with four ground balls.  Freshman goalie Chloe Wormsley finished with 10 saves including seven in the second half.

The Eagles had a very efficient shooting afternoon, scoring their 10 goals on only 16 shots and had assists on five.  Winthrop won the ground ball battle 22-18 and grabbed eight draw controls to Davidson's nine.  Winthrop forced 12 of Davidson's 19 turnovers.

Winthrop will close out its non-conference schedule with a two-game road trip this weekend with contests at Cincinnati on March 24 and Michigan on March 26.
